Soul/Funk Supergroup The Nth Power Visits Atlanta’s Vinyl on Sunday

EDITOR’S NOTE: Even I can’t listen to bluegrass all the time. Try listening to “Rawhide” when the door is shut and the lights are out. Today, in honor of The Nth Power’s stop at The Vinyl this Sunday, we’ll celebrate Funky Friday. Check out the Spotify playlist below, featuring all of the releases from The Nth Power and another funk record I can’t get enough of lately, Keller Williams’ Funk. Don’t forget, support this site and purchase recommended tracks/albums via our Funky Friday list and Amazon’s Associate Program!

When Ron Burgandy uttered, “that’s baby making music, that’s what that is,” he must have been listening to The Nth Power. “The next A-Team of soul music” is stopping at The Vinyl in Atlanta, GA as part of their debut national tour. Dubbed the “Thank You” tour, the jaunt follows the release of a new promotional single of the same name.

Combining drummer Nikki Glaspie (Dumpstaphunk, Beyoncé), bassist Nate Edgar (John Brown’s Body), keyboardist Nigel Hall (Lettuce, Warren Haynes Band), guitarist Nick Cassarino (Jennifer Hartswick Band, Big Daddy Kane), and Weedie Braimah on djembe (Toubab Krewe, Kreative Pandemonium), the supergroup began collaborating around the Jazz Fest in New Orleans. Their sound combines elements of soul, funk, R&B, and jazz to create something uniquely their own.

Rooted in a beat-first groove that emphasizes communication and spontaneity, The Nth Power is focused on creating an emotional experience with their music. “Some people are gonna dance, some people are gonna wanna make love, some are gonna cry, some are gonna have goose bumps,” Glaspie says. “That’s really what music is. It’s the science of making people feel.”

In addition to the recently released “Thank You,” The Nth Power released the six-track Basic Minimum Skills Test in April and plans to release a full album in 2014. Enjoying the buzz following a successful appearance at Bear Creek Music Festival, they’ll play The Vinyl in Atlanta Sunday 12/6 with additional stops in Nashville, St. Louis, Chicago, and the Northeast.
