Chocolate and pretzels, Coke and cherry, pizza and beer… some things just go together. Tim O’Brien on mandolin and Darrel Scott on guitar is one such pairing. They compliment each other despite their differences. As O’Brien while talking about their brief break in Colorado recently, Tim “went skiing and Darrell built an outhouse, because that’s how we roll.”
The duo were guests of Duluth, Georgia’s Eddie Owen Presents at Red Clay Theatre for a pair of shows dubbed a CD release party for 2013’s Memories and Moments on February 20-21, 2014. The first evening caught Tim and Darrell rotating lead through two sets , showcasing selections off the album and other numbers perfected while touring together.
Tim O’Brien rose to fame as a member of newgrass pioneers Hot Rize in the 1970’s. Known for his instrumental flexibility (he would play mandolin, fiddle, and banjo on this evening), friendly vocals and songwriting prowess, O’Brien shined on “Climbing Up A Mountain.” “Free Again” showcased his songwriting talents and he led Scott through a number of bluegrass favorites, including “Keep Your Lamp Trimmed And Burning,” “House Of Gold,” and “Working On A Building.”
Darrell Scott adds the muscle to the group. Known in the country scene as a great songwriter and session musician, his songs have been covered by Brad Paisley, Faith Hill, Alan Jackson, and numeous other A-List Nashvile talent. Towering on stage next to O’Brien, he can play and sing with a ferosity to match his physique. However, he can also play with a delicate touch in jazz voicings or sing in tone that is unexpected from a man with his frame. “With A Memory Like Mine” was his first lead of the evening and featured intense string bending. Scott also presented a couple of his compositions made famous by other artists, notably “Long Time Gone” and “It’s A Great Day to Be Alive,” early century hits recorded by the Dixie Chicks and Travis Tritt, respectively.
Darrell and Tim have released seventeen more dates in 2014, including festival performances at MerleFest, DelFest, and the Telluride Bluegrass Festival.
