“I Made You a Mixed Tape” Vol. 2 – “Bumper Sticker”

Getting to meet Keller Williams backstage at the 3 Sisters Bluegrass Festival in Chattanooga, TN.

I’ve told folks that if I could grow up to be any musician, I’d be Keller Williams. My favorite thing about Keller is that he seems to be a music fan first and an entertainer second. Whether busting out Grateful Dead tunes, playing bluegrass, or playing Funk (check out the new album and his current tour), you can tell he’s genuinely enjoying what he’s doing. Keller earned his reputation playing one-man shows but in recent years has brought together some of my favorite artists to play some of my favorite music. As Yonder Mountain’s Jeff Austin said on Rex, “the man who’s mind it came to, Mr. Keller Williams. Pickin’ it, layin’ it down. The one man gold machine, the one man sound.”

In 2012, Keller partnered with The Travelin’ McCourys to deliver Pick. A great end-to-end album, “Bumper Sticker” – inspired by one that read “my grass is blue” – is a personal favorite. The song is a salute to Keller’s favorite jamgrass artists and the guiding force between today’s mixed tape. Keller sings…

“I like Sam Bush in the morning, Peter Rowan in the afternoon. I like Larry Keel and Leftover Salmon when they’re howling at the moon. I like Hot Rize and John Duffey, Greensky and Yonder Mountain, too.”

… before finally saluting his album mates’ other bandleader, Del McCoury. The elder McCoury, a living legend, lends his trademark voice to the track.

“I Made You a Mixed Tape” Vol. 1

I didn’t work last night for the first time in a couple of weeks. Just didn’t feel like it. On the way in this morning I decided I’d bust something out quickly, prior to work. So, I relied on the old iPhone shuffle feature to help generate a playlist. Some editorial liberty was taken, but largely the tracks were picked by the phone. I included some non-bluegrass influenced tracks at the end. Songs that came on that I just couldn’t skip. Hope you enjoy.
